About Us

Who is NAK?

Nu Alpha Kappa (ΝΑΚ), is a Latino-based fraternity, which encompasses and values all cultures. We are the largest Latino-based fraternity on the west coast. Though our diverse membership is predominantly Latino, NAK encompasses and values all cultures. Here at UCI our goal is to create a support system for our brothers, to teach and practice professional development, and to give back to our communities. We are a lifetime family. We pride ourselves on being leaders, on being culturally proud, on giving back to our communities, and on our strong brotherhood. Our philosophy is best defined by our motto: "Men of Mind, Men of Culture, and Men of Pride."

The Birth of Psi Chapter

Seven years ago, with the initiative and determination of nine proud men, Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity Incorporated was established at the University of California, Irvine. A fraternity composed of a special breed of men who dedicate their lives to an everlasting brotherhood, academic excellence, and service to their community. In many ways, NAK’s principles were just an extension of these nine men’s core values and passions.

There were people who questioned NAK’s place at UC Irvine, but with the support of many organizations and the work of our founders, on August 18, 2012, the Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity Inc., Psi Chapter was born. Today, our brothers continue to make the Psi Chapter thrive and are committed to servicing our neighboring communities alongside our greek organizations and student body.

Thanks to our founders and all the brothers who have paved the way, NAK has earned its place as an exceptional fraternity at the university. Seven years is both a long time and a very short time, however in a world that is constantly and rapidly changing, we are proud of the progress we have made and are excited for what lies ahead.

How did Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. start and what exactly is it?

Nu Alpha Kappa (ΝΑΚ) is a Latino-based fraternity that encompasses and values all cultures. Often referred to as “NAK”, Nu Alpha Kappa was founded on February 26, 1988 on the campus of California Polytechnic State University, with twenty-four established chapters across California, Colorado, and Nevada. Nu Alpha Kappa was a founding member of the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO). In 2008 after no longer meeting NAKs needs, the organization left NALFO and is currently a member of the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC).

“Xinaco”, a Nahuatl word used by the Olmecs, describes an educated, amiable individual whose personality and charisma transcends and enlightens all cultures and social classes. The “Xinacos” (CHI-Na-Kos) meeting resulted in the creation of a new fraternity. The foundations of the fraternity were started by fifteen good friends at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, California, of which eleven would become founding fathers of the fraternity. This marked the beginning of Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, an organization based on the belief of a commitment to “Carnalismo” or brotherhood, the search for knowledge and the retention and pride of culture.

As of 2019, NAK has established 27 chapters in three states: California, Colorado, and Nevada.
